Chapter 29

Boston

I walked to the sofa across from the booth, waking Anna before heading outside the shop. She didn’t speak as I wrapped my arm around her and led us to the SUV. It was close to midnight and my welted skin pulled at every step. It was a peaceful burn, nowhere near as uncomfortable as I thought it might be. I hadn’t even expected to get so much done in one day, but like always, money won, and me, I was becoming more myself than I’d ever been. Dark. Light. The scene on my back had only taken two days for Ernie to draw. He was amazing. A true artist. And he’d captured the scene I described over the phone perfectly. It was as if he’d been walking that wooded path with me as I headed to bring justice to all those abused women. He hadn’t been, but the angel hovering just outside the cabin had. Lucy had always been with me in those days. Not physically, but inside me. It was the abuse she’d suffered from her brother that drove me to kill in the first place. Wanting her, loving her, had created the foundation of who I’d become.

“How are you feeling? Is your side still hurting?”

Anna’s head shook. “Not really. The pill kicked in.”

“You were very quiet tonight. What were you and Georgie whispering about? Did you tell him what we learned?” I walked Anna to the passenger door, noticing how distant she was.

“Huh?”

“Did you tell Georgie our suspicions?”

“No.”

“Are we going to?”

Anna reached to the door handle, opening it. “Sort of…get in. I’ll explain.”

I took in the surroundings, scanning the shadows for anyone who might be watching as I walked around and climbed in. I trusted no one. Not even the man she seemed to want to open up to. I liked Georgie a lot, but did I trust him not to hurt what was mine? Absolutely not. With her, I trusted no one.

I started the car, locking the doors as I turned to give her my attention.

“You’re delayed and it’s not the pill. Spill it. It’s something big. There’s no other reason for you to be so lost in thought. You were like this before you took the medication. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were about to solve this case.”

Anna looked over, her head nodding a little too quickly as she reached for my hands.

“Not solve, but I think I got something.”

“Really? How? Did Georgie find out a clue from his sources?”

“Not Georgie, Janessa. Guess where Destiny was a few weeks before she discovered she was pregnant?”

My head cocked while my eyes narrowed. “Where?”

“Magix.”

“You’re fucking kidding me. Why are we just hearing about this?”

Anna shrugged. “She didn’t think it was a big deal. She probably wouldn’t have even remembered it if I hadn’t been asking her questions about DeMarcus. Supposedly, he and Destiny had some disagreement over Janessa. He didn’t think she was a good influence. He found out about their club night and wasn’t too happy about it.
